Recognizing Burnout in Event Planning

Burnout builds up over time. Common causes include client demands and tight deadlines. Additionally, we wear countless hats as we juggle everything. The need to always be on-call and the financial pressures of tight budgets only add to this stress. Therefore, recognizing these issues is the first step toward managing and preventing burnout.

Burnout can catch even the most experienced planners by surprise. Signs include feeling drained and overall miserable. Moreover, physical symptoms like headaches or tension in the neck, back, and shoulders are not uncommon. You might often feel irritable or hopeless (hello short temper… guilty as charged) and notice that your quality of work is not what it used to be. Thus, the first step towards fixing the issue is acknowledging that you are struggling, become aware and then take action by practicing self-care and finding support systems.

Emotional exhaustion is a huge part of burnout. We quickly lose motivation. Before we know it, our body feels like trying to move concrete bricks. This affects both our work and personal lives. (But who are we kidding…we don’t actually have personal lives, do we?!) Thus, the first step towards fixing the issue is by practicing self-care and finding support systems.

Implementing Wellness Strategies

Stress management is SO CRUCIAL in our industry and yet, it’s often absent. However, implementing techniques such as time blocking, carving out time for movement each day, delegating tasks, and setting work boundaries can make a huge difference. Furthermore, peer support is a must for stress management, like what we offer in the Phoenix Collective Group.

Self-care shouldn’t be a luxury; it should be a non-negotiable. Finding daily “me time,” even if it’s only 5 minutes, boosts your mood. Of course, a good diet and sufficient sleep are also important. But, baby steps, I know. Meanwhile, mindfulness practices provide clarity, and engaging in non-work hobbies offers a creative outlet. Personally, I like a little salsa dancing to spice things up!

Set boundaries to protect your personal time. Make “NO” your favorite word. Define your work hours and communicate them clearly with clients, stakeholders and colleagues. Furthermore, flexible scheduling helps balance commitments. Use processes and systems to help streamline work so you can make time for relaxation.

Building Strong Support Systems

Professional networks are invaluable resources. Engaging with networks like the Phoenix Collective offers community and support. Networking provides mentorship and new insights. Consequently, cultivating these connections encourages growth and resilience.

Personal relationships offer emotional support. Spending quality time with loved ones reduces stress and enhances mental health. Furthermore, these connections act as a support system in tough times, offering encouragement and perspective.

Joining the Phoenix Collective Facebook Group gives you a place to find support and solace. It’s a safe space for all meeting and event professionals.
